Change to Herd Reports

Guelph, ON -- Effective September 26th 2017, CanWest DHI has added a new column that displays ‘kg/hl for Fat/Prot’ to the TEST DAY SUMMARY section of the Herd Summary/Herd Monitor Report.  No columns of information were removed. The new column was inserted and all others were adjusted accordingly.

herd report change

By adding the column, we aim to highlight the difference between % and kg/hl, while also providing the herd value which corresponds to the bulk tank data. This is a relatively minor adjustment, but will provide a better understanding of the information we provide.

Western Dairy Digest further explains the difference between % and kg/hl for Fat/Prot here:

Milk component concentrations are reported by DHI and genetics organizations as percentages. Your milk statement reports them as kilograms per hectolitre (kg/hL). The values reported using the two different units would be identical if milk had a density of exactly 1.0 kg per litre (like water). But it doesn’t. The density of milk varies slightly, depending on its component concentrations. The formula used to compute density is quite complex but, normally, density will be in the 1.033 - 1.034 kg/litre range.
